A Smart Cycling Traffic Skills 101 class.

Whether you are a beginning cyclist, an experienced cyclist, or are returning to cycling after years away from it, you will learn useful skills in the Smart Cycling Traffic Skills 101 class. The curriculum for this class was developed by the League of American Bicyclists<http://www.bikeleague.org/>. The mission of the League of American Bicyclists is “is to lead the movement to create a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone”.

During this class you will refine and refresh your cycling skills, learn to ride your bike confidently and safely for transportation and recreation, and to ride safely in traffic and on trails. You’ll also learn to be visible and ride predictably. Intersection positioning, group riding, bike safety checks, fixing flats, essential on-bike handling skills, and hazard avoidance techniques are also covered in this in-depth, hands-on class. Successful completion of both classes earns a certificate of completion from the League of American Bicyclists.

The Traffic Skills 101 class includes two sessions – a self-paced online session and an on-bike session:
Part 1: Classroom Session – online class (approximately 2.5 hours)
  • Go to http://www.bikeed.org/ to complete the online course. Must be completed by 10/14.
  • Topics include: Getting on a Bike and Keeping it Running, Traffic Rules and Safety, and Enjoying the Ride

Part 2: On-Bike Session – Sunday 10/15 from 9:30am to 2:30pm at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, IL. 
  • Essential Bike Handling Skills
  • Emergency Maneuvers
  • Cycling in Traffic

The cost for this class is $20. Minimum age is 16. Maximum class size is 12 students. Bicycle and helmet are required for class on 10/15.
