Project Ride Smart is open to Westlake Charter School students only (5th grade). Topics will include benefits of safe cycling; bicycle traffic laws, signs, and signals; using proper hand signals; riding predictably and visibly; helmet use and fitting; ABC Quick Check; Five Rules of the Road; lane positioning; right-of-way rules for intersections and turning; parts of a bicycle (identification); bicycle fitting; personal safety check; reasons for bicycle collisions; three types of hazards. Students will practice the following skills: riding in a straight line, using ghost space, stopping with both brakes, using power pedal, signaling, riding with one hand, scanning. The program includes three neighborhood rides.
